It’s true that education struggles to prepare us for a future that no one can predict. It places greater priority on certain subjects over others, because the creators of the curriculum feel these skills are what our coming generation needs.
It’s true that a lot of it is going to be irrelevant. Who knows that the world will be like in 10 years?
But the education I received was also coloured with sentimentality, a little bit of wistfulness. I learned about life during the Victorian Era, and the Caribbean Sea. I learned that “...all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
What I learned gave me a frame in which to interpret my current situation. It gave me context in which to see my life now, helped me see how much things have changed, and gave me the courage to anticipate a drastically different future. It helped me see the world as a place filled with possibilities.
I learned mostly math and science, but the other small parts, the odd bits here and there, were to me...the best bits of my education.
